What would the addition of paintings or sculpture contribute to your home, office and corporate environment?

So, you have a small office garden, your corporate reception area, an area of your home garden where you love to entertain friends, guests and family or in the lounge of your family home where you want to relax and rejuvenate. What can artworks bring to these settings, what intrinsic values and qualities will sculpture and/ or paintings bring to your life?
Artworks will bring a relaxing human element to your home, office or corporate space. In particular, my sculpture attempts to bring elements of the natural world right into the sphere of human life and daily activity. Why? Because in these modern times, we are often disconnected from nature by hard, impersonal walls, harsh concrete surfaces that form the intensely built up urban settings in which we live and work. This separation from nature causes a disjunction from the real natural world that causes a feeling of disquiet, anxiety and restlessness. We long for a time on an empty beach, near a gurgling stream or the rolling hills and woods that refresh and invigorate our sense of well-being. Artworks, especially my own sculpture reflect natural landscape forms, feature water and stone-like materials have a calming effect on our human psyche. Artworks humanise our personal environments by reflecting nature and also the soft lines of human anatomy, which suggests silent companionship.
For me, something as simple as having a bowl, formed of organic rounded shapes that containing water in which float a few fresh blossoms pleases my eye, enabling me to feel connected to planet Earth in a direct way. Thus, in my home and office, there are several of these bowls of differing designs; at the front door to welcome my guests and family, in the bathroom to instil a relaxing atmosphere, on a coffee table or in the summer on the deck or our courtyard garden where we eat, relax and interact with each other at the end of a busy day. The fresh blossoms, the movement of the water as a slight breeze passes catch the eye and immediately connect us to the beauty of nature. This triggers joy, pleasure, appreciation of all that we have, and we feel a part of the environment in a real way.
In our garden, where we spend a great deal of time during the spring, summer and autumn months, is a larger sculptural water feature, which, together with our fish pond adorned with water lilies and surrounded by intense planting of perfumed shrubbery, lends an atmosphere of peaceful calm, as if we are secluded in a secret glade deep in the woods, perhaps beside a little stream where fish bask in the sun and dart to the bank to nibble on the morsels we toss them from time to time. Recently we have had a new visitor, Mr Jeremy Fisher, the frog. He splashes into the pond when there are sudden sounds or movement and this always makes us chuckle. The sculpture’s rounded, organic forms are soothing and meditative, and thus create a restful and relaxing atmosphere. The dragonflies hover over the pond on hot summer days and the Thrushes and Blackbirds who know that this is their territory too come every morning and afternoon to splosh about at the shallow edge of the pond or in the birdbath set discretely apart from our sitting area. In these ways we are living in a wild place that we share with other creatures. The birds come for our plums and sweet apples, the Tuis rocket down for the Kowhai flowers in bloom or the Privet berries in season.
This garden with its various artworks provides a haven from the nerve fracturing business and chaos of our daily lives in the concrete city jungle outside our personal domain. The artworks and water features bring nature and humanising forms into the heart of our home and work place.
In my office I also have a large beautiful bowl of water at the reception area. This bowl has organic, curving forms that suggest curling leaf and fern fronds or curlicues formed by the swirling movement of flowing water, the wind and rounded sculptural forms that appear smoothed and moulded by moving water, resembling those shapes found in nature. As in our home, sculpture and water features in my reception area imbue the room with a soothing, relaxing atmosphere, creating a spacious haven from the ongoing hyperactivity present in the outside world.
You too can turn your home and work environment into a peaceful retreat, transformed by the simple addition of well thought out art pieces that still the mind and energise the human spirit, in readiness for focussed action.

Initially Jan White trained as a designer and then as a painter. After a decade or so, she began working with three dimensional sculptural forms in a variety of materials: clay and wax for casting in metal, wood, perspex, scrap metal, slate, stone and found objects. In these sculptural works, White attempts to reduce form to the barest reflection of a meaningful coda. Themes she works with contemplate issues around the fourth dimension (the philosophical/spiritual), the purpose of a human life, and long-standing Western cultural values based on Neo-Platonic humanism developed during the Renaissance.
Her work divides into two related streams: simple organic forms that invoke a meditative state are one facet. A second area comprises thought provoking compositions that incorporate large, highly simplified forms painted in oils, sometimes combined with additional found objects and/or projected video narratives, which address philosophical, social and political issues.
