tips on painting a bird bath?

I am looking for color ideas to paint a bird bath and stones to put in the inside to keep birds from slipping. The bird bath sits in an area with lots of flowering shrubs.

An off white would be nice. Like a cream color.
Paint can kill the birds, so be very careful about what paint you put on it. It will peel off and the birds will eat the residue.
