Using Rain Water Tanks For Your Home

Some people use rainwater tanks in their home to collect water for drinking. This is a great way to collect water, and save on your monthly bill. Most of the time, people collect from runoffs such as from rain gutters and the roof, which run into a water tank, and are stored for later use. Collecting rainwater is not only a great way to save money on water, but it is also good for the environment, as less water is required from the water and utilities companies to come to your house. This rain water can be used for bathing, drinking or cooking.

Some people prefer to be completely self-sufficient, growing their own food in a garden and creating their own power with solar energy or windmills, and those people often collect rainwater in rain barrels. Also, those that do not have access to clean water, or worry about contaminants from the city water that comes to their house. Also, using water for toilets, washing machines and vehicle washes will save quite a bit of money, as will using it for showers, because these are the biggest users of water in your home.

Rainwater tanks are often constructed from concrete, galvanized steel or polyethylene. Some other materials that are sometimes used in the creation of water collection units such as rain barrels are stainless steel and fiberglass. The tanks are not transparent, so that the water stored is not exposed the sun, which helps decreate slgal blooms, and generally rainwater tanks are stored above the ground in a location where clean water can easily flow into the rain barrel without many contaminants. The materials that make up these rain water tanks are usually resistant to both chemicals and rusting.

Rainwater tanks are often covered to prevent these contaminants from getting in. That includes insects and debris as well as feces from birds and other animals. Tanks that are specifically created to store household water may be made of steel and have a liner that keeps the water from leaking out, and helps to make it safe to drink and make the tank last as long as possible. Even so, water for drinking is often purified afterward to make sure, with easy home purification systems installed to run water through and make it completely safe.

Rainwater tanks are generally from about 400 liters to millions of liters for huge water storage tanks. Although it does cost a little bit to get into a water collection tank, the money that you will save will make up for it over time, so it is a sound investment. Smaller rainwater tanks may not cost as much as you think, for home use and even an inch of rain on a roof that measures about 1000 square feet, or 93 square meters can create run-off or more than 620 gallons of water. This means that you can collect a great deal of water when it rains.

Selecting the Right Water Feature for Your Garden

When contemplating a water feature for your garden it is
important to reflect on the style of your landscaping and draw

Do you think that your flower garden needs a little more drama? Consider adding a fountain water feature. Installing a water fountain is really not all that difficult, and the upkeep is minimal.

I love to sit by my fountain and relax with a good book — or even just watch the birds taking a bath. Hummingbirds, especially, like to take water fountain “showers.” So, if you add chemicals to prevent the green algae, be sure that it won’t harm the birds.

Since we live in southern California, our water fountain is surrounded by tropical plants and flowers. The types of plants that you use will be determined by the location that you live in.

When you add a water feature to your garden, consider the type of garden that you have. A natural rock waterfall might fit your theme better than a stand-alone fountain.

If you are having trouble deciding what kind of water feature would be best for your type of garden, go to the library and look at some gardening design books and magazines. I’m sure you’ll find a few that you like and that would be suitable for your area. Also looking online for ideas is a good choice.

You can have your water feature be part of a pond for a more natural look. If you have a formal garden, the pond would most likely be made up of concrete. Less formal gardens would do well with rock or brick. Pond liners can be purchased that can make your pond look more natural.

Be sure that you have access to electrical power before you make your final decision on the placement of your water feature. You can have an electrician add an outlet to a building or patio structure that is close to your garden. There are also extension cords available that are meant to be buried under your garden or lawn soil.

Water fountains and waterfalls are known for their soothing qualities. Doing yoga exercises near the sound of water falling helps to concentrate your positive energy. You can meditate to the quite beauty of sight and sound or just sit and relax.

There is something else that you should think about when deciding whether or not to add a water feature to your yard or garden. Some of your closer neighbors might not agree that the sounds made by your water feature are soothing. However, most people will appreciate it.

So, if you’re looking for a way to give your yard or garden more beauty and drama, think about adding a water fountain. It’s not as expensive have you would think it would be and the beauty it provides is worth the minimal cost of the installation.

Pakistan is one of the developing countries of South Asia. Amongst various problems faced by the developing countries, one of the major challenges is fresh water availability to its inhabitants. Government of pakistan is paying full attention towards this problem because many more issues are associated with proper supply of water and drainage system. Few of them are the gradual decrease in ground water level, purification of drinking water, proper allocation of resources to system with increase in population, installation of properly planned drainage system in congested areas as well as for the new schemes.
To identify the causes of water related diseases a properly managed water supply and drainage management information system is the basic requirement of this era. The information generated by such information system will be more useful in analysis and planning if GIS is involved.

Theuse of GIS will facilitate the users of the system to identify spatially referenced features on the ground, perform analysis, infer and make appropriate actions on time.
A Spatial Database is required to store the spatially referenced data and to keep log of allocated resources as well as the information about the required financial and technical resources for planning extensions.
To keep in mind these things that describe above we have developed web based GIS for fresh water supply system of UC-60 Lahore.

Study Area

Our study area is UC-60 Lahore. Union Council 60 is a poor peri urban community located in Aziz Bhatti Town near Rangers Headquarters Lahore.

Location

31Degree 33 minute 05 Second North and 74 Degree 24 minute 56 Second East.

Present Status of Water and Sanitation in UC-60 Lahore

They have no access to government water supply and sanitation schemes. Poverty, illiteracy and absence of any health and hygiene program have resulted in poor community health. 37 to 42% adults and children were sick in last three month from water and sanitation diseases.

Poor health of the Inhabitants

The initial field survey revealed that people in the area do not have any water supply and sanitation system.
Anecdotal evidence from the discussion with communities suggests   that elders and children’s health is affected as the sewage water is   mixed with the drinking water.
The existing water supply is through instillation of small motor pumps to   extract ground water.

Disease Profile of the Area

Extremely low literacy rate, poor hygienic knowledge about the safe storage of water has impacted the community health. It is reported that in children Gastro is mostly reported diseases followed by Diarrhea and Jaundice

Knowledge about quality and storage of water

The respondents were aware about the importance of the quality of water based on the indicators of taste, color and smell. 58% were not satisfied with the quality of water based on the indicators. However, there un-satisfaction was not translated into concrete positive   healthbehavior

Project Goal

Development of Web based GIS system for the spread of Fresh Water, while making the system sustainable and research oriented through management of resources applied and impact assessment tools and techniques.

Methodology

2) Database Design Phase

Database design is the process of producing a detailed data model of a database.   this logical data model contains all the needed logical and physical design choices and physical storage parameters needed to generate a design in a Data Definition Language, which can then be used to create a database. A fully attributed data model contains detailed attributes for each entity.

3) Processes

Georeference

To georeference something means to define its existence in physical space. That is, establishing a relation between raster or vector images to map projections or coordinate systems. This procedure is thus imperative to data modeling in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) and other cartographic methods. When data from different sources need to be combined and then used in a GIS application, it becomes essential to have a common referencing system.
This is brought about by using various georeferencing techniques.

4) Spatial Data on Web

a) Mapguide Open Source(MGOS)

MapGuide Open Source is a web-based platform that enables users to quickly develop and deploy web mapping applications and geospatial web services. MapGuide features an interactive viewer that includes support for feature selection, property inspection, map tips, and operations such as buffer, select within, and measure. MapGuide includes an XML database for managing content, and supports most popular geospatial file formats, databases, and standards.

b) Fusion

Fusion is part of Map Guide. Fusion handles the user interface between the client and Map Guide. Fusion is a web-mapping application development framework for MapGuide Open Source (MGOS). Fusion allows web designers and developers to build rich mapping applications quickly and easily.
Using “widgets” that provide the interface functionality within Fusion’s modular architecture; developers are able to add, remove, or modify functionality using standard-compliant HTML and CSS. Fusion requires no proprietary browser plug-ins, and it produces applications that work in all major browsers on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Fusion provides a flexible means of interacting with Map Guide Open Source (MGOS). Using a growing suite of widgets, this modular-based system allows us to build powerful, interactive AJAX applications quickly with minimal programming experience. For applications requiring special functionality, Fusion provides an extensible platform that allows we to develop own widgets.

Conclusion

Water Supply can use GIS in conjunction with the source water assessments to help protect the various water supply system. With an adequate database, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can serve as a powerful analytic and decision-making tool for water supply system.
Furthermore, it can also be used for management and to test consequences of development.

At least that is the legend around Norris Lake, just outside of Atlanta. Rumor has it that General William Tecumseh Sherman and his forces camped in the river basin that is now known as Norris Lake for a period after sucessfully destroying Atlanta and the extensive railroad system. It is highly likely to be true because the Lake is mostly surrounded by high hills and would have offered great protection and looking at a map of Sherman’s route, Norris Lake would have been right on his way from Decatur to Covingtonm and on to Savannah.

But regardless of what happened 145 years ago, we do know that in 1936 the No Business Creek, which feeds the Yellow River was dammed up to create Norris Lake, for the purpose of building a fishing camp for the harried city slickers in Atlanta. Tiny summer cottages and little concrete block boat houses were erected on the waterfront.

If fishing then was half as good as it is today, the developer had to make a ton of dough. Today, it is not unusual to tie-in to a 9 or 10 pound large mouth bass and certainly common place to take home a stringer of Brim and Cats in an hour or so. Recently the lake was stocked with stripped bass, a very popular sport fish that you are asked to release back into the wild.

Fish are just a small part of the wildlife population that helps you get away from the city. A bird sanctuary peninsula is home to about every bird native to Georgia, Canadian geese, Peking and Moscovi ducks and of course white tail deer. A family of beaver calls the No Business Creek home and Florida Soft Shelled turtles are quite common along with the usual painted turtles, snappers and Box turtles. Owls of all varieties, hawks, heron and egrets are everywhere.

Water sports abound at Norris Lake. It is the only lake in the area where you are actually allowed to “play” on the water. There are no horsepower limits on the lake so you can actually water ski, wake board, sail, swim or jet ski on the lake. With 96 acres of private water, there is room for everybody since only resident members and their guests are allowed boat access. On any typical summer weekend you seldom see more than 3-4 boats on the water at a time and usually they are slow poking pontoon party boats anchored in a raft near the center of the lake while folks young and old drift in the cool lake waters. There might be a wake boarder showing off his latest jump or fancy flip or some 8 year old just getting up for the first time on his own wake board. Jet skiiers and wave runners are welcome but very scarce for some reason.

Most of the old original fishing cabins have been dozed and new, spacious water front homes have been built in their stead. There is nothing comparable to leaving the traffic on I-285, going home to your waterfront home, uncorking a cold one and dropping a hook off your own dock and grabbing fresh bass for dinner. And the amazing part is that this hidden lake has not yet been discovered by Atlanta so you can still buy a waterfront home for under $150,000.

Situated just off SR 124 about half way between Snellville and Stonecrest Mall on I-20, you would never know the lake existed if you didn’t have a map. Just about 8 minutes to the new Wal-Mart Super Center at Centerville and the Publix, Norris Lake is only 15 minutes from Stonecrest Mall and downtown Snellville and Conyers. Except at early morning drive time, it is only about half an hour to Buckhead. Country living doesn’t get any better than Norris Lake.

Most of Norris Lake is in Gwinnett County, so most of the children are part of the award winning Gwinnett School System. A brand new elementary school is presently being built on SR124 right at Norris Lake Road and is supposed to open next year.

Think of it: if you were a bird, where would you want to splash about? Would you choose a muddy, stinky puddle or a clean, fresh bird bath? The choice is not just obvious to humans, but birds have a distinct preference. Once you have decided to lend a helping hand to your local birds, make the trek to find a bath that fits into your style and design of your yard. There are tons of options, from baths that borrow style from the white marble columns of ancient Greece to fantastically modern creations that could double for an avant garde statue.

After you have brought your bird bath home, find a place to set up the bath well within sight of your outdoor and indoor spaces. Consider installing a bird bath near your porch, patio, deck, or house’s windows so that you can enjoy the birds from anywhere in your home. Fill the bird bath with cool, clean water and watch the bird flock around your bath.

In order to draw more birds, consider using a fountain bird bath instead of a traditional bird bath that holds still water. Birds love the sound of running water and prefer fountain bird baths dramatically over still bird baths. If a fountain bird bath is out of your budget, consider creating your own fountain. Something as simple as a bucket with a hole drilled in the bottom positioned over top of your existing bird bath works just as great as expensive fountain bird bath, although it may not be quite as aesthetically pleasing.

Keep in mind that birds need bird baths year round, especially in some parts of the country that seem to be out of the grip of Jack Frost. Instead of putting your bird bath inside during the winter, purchase a model that can remain outdoors for the entire year. Heated bird baths work to ensure that ice does not form in the bath, but does not produce a birdie hot tub, so birds will keep coming to your yard regardless of the weather.

We began our work by constructing a garden water fountain at the very end of a brand new swimming pool the Turner’s had just had installed. We built the basin in the shape of distorted figure-8 that bent to the left and right of what would ultimately become a walkway over the water. We used a gunite concrete substructure that would seal the basin and keep it waterproof, and then we concealed the top of the concrete with a decorative stone-clad overlay whose blue-gray color complimented that of the home. When we finished it looked like a small stone well filled with clear, running water that drained into the pool on one end. On the same side of this drain, we built a stone sculpture out of three stones planed into cubes. The cubes were piled one on top of the other, so that when the structure was complete, it looked like a sculpture made from boulders on some far Pacific island. The water rose out of the stone at the top and flowed down all four sides of the sculpture into the pool.

The new water fountain and surrounding basin now gave us an ideal center point around which to plant a flower garden replete with a number of species. On the left, we planted Mexican sedum to add a lime green contrast to the surrounding landscape, and we planted golden globe to provide flowering ground cover. To add a three dimensional element to the garden, we planted foxtail ferns to provide year-round greenery, and bird of paradise for its resplendent, seasonal blooms. Farther back from the fountain itself, we planted a river birch tree that framed the entire garden from the vantage point of the pool and added an additional aesthetic at night as a backdrop for up lighting. To emphasize the unique aspect of our water garden fountain we planted pink and red pentas on the right that drew the eye upward toward the stone sculpture, and we trained a vine to grow up the far wall of the home that would mirror its unique cubic design.

We then completed the project by building a walkway that led from the front of the property to the home. We constructed this walkway out of stepping pads that actually float on water. This allowed us to build the walkway straight over the water in the center of the garden. We deliberately used this design in order to blend regular material with irregular material. The stones move in a progression from asymmetry to symmetry the closer you get to the house. The very first stepping stone has only two straight sides, for example, and the second has three. Each stone that follows becomes increasingly square as it passes over the garden water fountain until it finally reaches the back patio of the home.

If the bird use the bird-bath, will they fly away and slowly freeze their wings, etc. ???

Even the most novice bird watcher places a bird feeder out in
winter, what strikes me, is the number of experienced bird
watchers who do not provide water for the birds during winter.

The energy expanded looking for a fresh water source could be
better used for staying well and surviving the winter.

All wildlife needs water, Summer or Winter.

Birds, like humans, need water all year. By investing in a
heated bird bath or by adding a bird bath heater to your
existing bird bath, you’ll be providing the greatest resource
birds need in order to survive.

Bird bath heaters are usually available wherever bird feeding
supplies are offered. Check local hardware stores, large
discount stores, and online.

Heated bird baths are most commonly found on-line. These are
complete bird baths with the heater built into the bath.

When using either of these types, make sure your power source is
safe. If you are unsure, hire an electrician to check it out or
to install a GFCI outlet on the outside of your house. These
types of outlets provide saftey for outdoor bird baths and any
other electrical tools used in the yard.

Place your heated bird bath near your feeders for easier
viewing. Even birds that don’t normally visit your feeders will
visit your bird bath. All backyard birds need water. Also, when
placing your bath, make sure there is cover for the birds. Water
on the feathers make birds easy targets for prey.

Do not place the bird bath too close to cover, otherwise cats
can hide and attack the birds more easily, a few yards will be
adequate.

The recommended type of bird bath, is the pedestal style. These
give the birds more security by being 2 or more feet above
ground. This height allows birds to view their surroundings and
any would be predators. Any bird bath can be used.

By providing water for birds this winter, you’ll not only be
providing a service to our winter birds, but you’ll have a
greater diversity of birds and more of them to watch. And…
