How can we keep your bird bath from turning black from the water?

The areas where water runs down on our bird baths turns black and is very hard to clean. Is there something we can add into the water that will not harm birds?

Will a fountain stop our bird bath from turning green?

Will a bird bath fountain stop the algae from accumulating so fast? Currently I have to clean it out every other day and if I miss a day or two it needs to be scrubbed. And I’m really lazy.
