Flemish Giant Rabbit? Part 2, Cages?

I would like to build an outdoor hutch for 2 Flemish Giants, I say build due to the fact that I have yet to see a rabbit hutch long or tall enough for one FG, let alone two.

Please don’t lecture me on the “cruelty” of keeping a bunny outside. Rabbits have been living outside for thousands of years. Yes, it’d be cruel to keep one in a tiny hutch with no protection, but I’d make the cage:

~Raised (off the ground)
~Large, tall enough that the they could “stand up” on their hind legs and wide enough that they could run and hide.
~Safe with a solid floor (to prevent sore feet).
~Partly weather-proof with shingled roof.

I live around a very very busy developed suburb, and have a large concrete patio, I’d like to keep the cage on the patio and up against the house because:

~It’ll help deter the raccoons and coyote, as well as the hawk who likes to frequent my yard and kill small birds.
~It’s shaded during the afternoon and evening.
~It’s right next do my sliding glass door.
~I can let them loose on the patio (with a removeable fence) without having to worry about them eating the (fertilized) grass or getting bugs on them.
~At night I can put up a 3-sided barrier that will block the rabbits view and protect them. It could be made of:
A. Joined and nailed 3 large sheets of plywood like 3 sides of a rectangle (so that it looks like this |__|), the 4th open side being the house the cage backs up to. Then slide it around the cage.
B. A lighter material. I thought of tarp, but figured that even if I taped it down, predators would poke a hole in it.

Any ideas for a cage?

Part 1. About the Conscious Mind, the Subliminal Mind and the Unconscious Mind…the Spirit?

Q: Can the incomplete knowledge of psychology be expanded through a simple technique?
A: Yes, and from another acquired spiritual structure of consciousness and its reality. Because spiritual knowledge and the silent practice of transcendental meditation, functions on the unconscious uninvolved level to expand the human mind and also dissolve its acquired and inherited disorders from inside out. That is the exact opposite of the conventional method of psychology. That deals with understanding and expanding the human mind and dissolving those same psychological disorders from the outside in. * See the author’s separate article on the subject of Correct Meditation for a further detailed explanation*

Clarification: Yet as a solved paradox, both concrete methods should complement each other and speed the whole process up of expanding and healing a psychologically & emotionally damaged heart and mind. Because the qualities of the heart and the qualities of the mind in our existing structure of physical consciousness, are constantly at war with each other. Love and reason are the warring factions from the viewpoint and creativity of the poet, but in fact the conscious mind and the subliminal (sub-conscious) mind lacking communication through the conscious intellect, are the real warring factions from a metaphysical (spiritual) viewpoint and understanding.

Expanding our awareness (consciousness) is the path to solving this enigma that is tied to the primordial structure of ego consciousness that we are born with at this point in our human evolution. The quantum leap we need to make on this planet, is to be able to leave that structure of biological physical consciousness behind when we reach adulthood. At this point of our species evolution, ego consciousness is the norm for life.The regular twice daily short practice of transcendental meditation, is the spiritual path to overcome that evolution stumbling block. To then acquire a further structure of consciousness and the intuitive means to understand how the Spiritual System that underwrites life works. Along with acquiring the abstract silent means to stay in sync with the spiritual Laws of Nature structuring order out of chaos in Creation and Life

The self-referral Laws of Nature, that are seldom in sync with the thoughts out of our primordial structure of ego consciousness. That is secondary (physical) intelligence and not primary (spiritual) intelligence. Fusing the two through the catalyst of Correct Meditation, is the solution to solving that anomaly and it’s separated incommunicado functions in the mind. The abstract intelligence acquired out of its regular practice, enters all parts of the human physiology to enliven those perfect self-referral spiritual Laws. To then help restore order where there is chaos in the primordial archetypal spiritual intelligence that our physical biology & chemistry has manifested out of.

In effect, this is what we are doing with synthetic drugs on the physical biological level, but we are not treating the spiritual located and karmic perpetuated cause…only the physical symptoms. In fact the saturated use of those synthetic chemical drugs into life, are unknowingly creating a potential for more chaos to arise in the self-referral spiritual laws balancing the opposing negative and positive (dissolving and re-creating) archetypal intelligence of primordial Nature that orchestrates life. Because re-synthesized (lifeless) chemical drugs, have no interactive communication with the spiritual intelligence that life has manifested out of. They are an alien introduced synthetic ‘cause and effect’ to its primordial archetypal intelligence & self-referral perfect laws structuring the evolution of life.

About the disciplines of psychology and psychiatry:
There are a lot of dedicated humanitarian principled people in these complex professions. Outside of the created character of Alf, the author has no wish to tread on their toes insensitively because of that altruistic fact. These dedicated disciplines do much good in society, and are well deserving of respect and appreciation for such. But unfortunately, there is also much ego deadwood and conceit in its branches at the moment…like a lot of other science disciplines. As well as a growing number of opportunists that merely attend its University courses to acquire its knowledge to manipulate the Market Place & Society. Therefore not to help others, but to exploit and control others for self-gratuitous gain & power that sources megalomania.

Therefore a human being that has become the definition of a sociopath and a lost soul in Nature’s dictionary of human definitions because of it. The manipulative marketing/advertising industry is just one out-of-control rampant example that comes immediately to mind. The money markets, public relations and political arena are another. It indicates very poor quality consciousness within these opportunistic clever human beings that possess high I.Q. but a minus of positive qualities in the spiritual department. Poor quality consciousness & a negative psyche (that has nothing to with I.Q.), sums up this growing exploitation and manipulation of society in this big business greed corrupted World.

A negative World in which everything has become a product for sale and everything has become equated to money and what it buys. At the moment, it is psychological and social disorder and dead-end destiny for this consumer driven Civilization. There is absolutely nothing positive to say about this all-consuming addictive human created money making ideology, especially where huge private enterprise corporations and those running them on obscene salaries are concerned. They are functioning out of a human created reality (delusion) that has become totally divorced from the spiritual workings of Nature through abuse of acquired power, gross excess and unconscionable greed. All are ego sourced euphoric qualities that contaminate others and fuel a delusional self-esteem that destroys the spiritual evolution of the individual and Society.

Greed, has come to be accepted as being normal in our big business consumed civilization without Corporate & Money Market restraint. Psychologically impaired and socially blind, is not an unreasonable descriptive to apply to those who consider this insatiable all-consuming greed and acquisition activity normal behaviour for a human being. It has merely become normal behaviour for a human being, through its indoctrination into society and the misuse of born business acumen to serve self-interest and the hip-pocket:. The wasted path of life to no-where land in the departure lounge sums up its out of control all-consuming money making ideology.

Severe but justified criticism:
This contagious socially destructive money making disease, is the result of the negative karmic influence of GREED that has captured this Civilization and its dead-end consumer direction and destiny. It can be compared to the contagious euphoric fever (karmic influence) of an 18th century Gold Rush, only a hundred times more globally potent, destructive and contagious. Especially in a World that has become the exclusive playground of entrepreneurial money making geniuses, big corporate private enterprise business and born gifted worshiped human beings that are hailed as winners in society. Winners, that have become the primary focus of the Media to create news out of and glorify at every opportunity.

Clarification: There is nothing complimentary to Nature’s Laws or life in glorifying and worshiping material achievement acquired out of self-interest for individual gain. It is accomplishment driven by the primordial ego to acquire power and a delusional self-esteem and self-worth. Glorifying winning, self-interest and individual achievement in society, has become a Media saturated misconception that has fragmented society and retarded its social evolution. When we turn twenty one and become an adult in Nature’s Laws, individual self-interest unquestionably becomes unproductive to the spiritual evolution of a society and a human being. Both stagnate on the ladder of evolution as a dead-end result.

Pointing the psychological finger:
The worst offender for spreading this contagious influence of euphoric greed, winning, self-interest and delusion that destroys positive values and corrupts the social evolution of society, has unquestionably been the ideology (created reality) of the do-what-you-like Commercial Television/Radio & Glossy Magazine Empire. With its product financed port folio of cheque book journalism, pea-brain commentary, immature glitz & glamour, saturated product advertising, socially retarding reality shows, poor quality adolescent targeted programs, intellect deficit entertainment called drama, endless in-your-face promo’s and equally ego fuelled Hollywood copied adolescent presentation and delivery. That is the negative product of immature adult human creativity and expression, becoming totally out of sync with the Laws of Nature structuring order out of chaos in our human physiology & consciousness.

A spiritual look at this socially and psychologically damaging out-of-control Commercial T.V./Radio Medium driven by greed:
This now saturated over-the-top communication medium, with the manipulative help of new age sociopath marketing geniuses and advertising guru’s, has come to dominate the Market Place and every other place in Society. The most psychologically damaging and far reaching of all, being the Family Home and therefore the unexpanded minds of every T.V. indoctrinated generation since its inception. Therefore its exploitation, manipulation and saturated poor quality values, have become a perfectly acceptable part of life locked within the subliminal workings of every adult mind brought up on its unrelenting commercial diet of products, superficial values, immature programs, image creating and the promotion of self-gratification in Society. The saturated influence of which, is unknowingly creating psychological disorder in Society and retarding it spiritual & social evolution.

Note: The above fact made obvious through our inability to see a Wolf in Sheep’s clothing that saturated greed driven Commercial Television represents to a child’s growing vulnerable delicate mind…psychologically, socially and spiritually speaking. In Nature’s Laws…that have nothing in common with human created Corporate Law, no ideology has the right to exploit, corrupt and destroy the evolution of a society/civilization. There is no defence for greed, exploitation, manipulation and abuse of power in those perfect spiritual laws and the status-quo intelligence of this Creation that underwrites them. It is the wasted path of life that has more to offer than life, but not when we degrade and exploit it to make big bucks and fuel the economy out of greed. The consumer religion of saturated advertising and its superficial values, are unknowingly doing just that at the moment.

The psychological bottom line: Commercial Television, is the ultimate communication tool of big predatory ruthless business to rule the consumer direction and therefore the dead-end destiny of this greed driven civilization. The subliminal component of a Commercial T.V. product indoctrinated mind has become its $ barcode. Constantly being activated and manipulated without the vast majority being consciously aware of it. That is why Alf has given them and other big buck consumed ideologies, the analogous title of Darth & Associates on the spiritual boot camp detention room blackboard. Because these out of control greed driven ideologies, are functioning out of the dissolving negative archetypal intelligence of primordial Nature and not the evolution supporting positive archetypal intelligence of primordial Nature.

Clarification of the above. This mankind created ideology of consumerism and its euphoric influence, has usurped the self-referral function of the spiritual Laws of Nature to create and maintain order out of chaos in our human intelligence and creativity. From a spiritual perspective, this product saturated consumer World is in complete social chaos from out of this indoctrinated, definitely socially destructive, human created reality sourced to greed & self-gratification. A commercial dominated fed and led valueless money making World that has unknowingly become a dysfunctional, shallow, superficial, self-gratuitous, greedy, all-consuming World because of it.

Apart from comically ridiculing those responsible for this psychological mess, there is absolutely nothing positive or uplifting to be said when exploring this big business money making ideology and its worship, that is driven and possessed by the influence of greed. Greed, on the scale it has become in this decaying Civilization, is a human created karmic influence (entity) that has infiltrated the interactive workings of primordial Nature and diffused the Laws of Nature structuring order out of chaos in its archetypal intelligence…and therefore our biological human intelligence. The result of that corruption of the Laws of Nature, translates as human behaviour becoming ever more dysfunctional, ego-driven, irrational, all-consuming, all-expanding, all-conquering, selfish, thoughtless, sycophantic, self-gratuitous and socially destructive without realizing it. In the Spiritual System that underwrites life, it means our social and spiritual evolution has stagnated out of its accumulating destructive karmic influence.

The Commercial Media fuelling the above saturated influence, need to take a big reality check and stop promoting delinquent behaviour and eulogizing human worship & products in their communication and programs. It is called adult maturity, dignity, humility, setting a good example to young minds, professionalism and obtaining a ticket to Upstairs and not the Opposition at the end of the human day. To go around worshiping human beings and endorsing dysfunctional behaviour to sell products, create news and entertainment out of, is the sign of spiritual decay taking hold of a Society from out of those promoting its delusion to acquire self-esteem, self-importance and preen the immature ego they have become lost in…along with big bucks and big reputations of course?

More psychological disorder in the top end of town:
The totally absurd logic that assumes business can keep doubling profits each and every year ad-infinitum, is the same irrational logic that assumes the irreplaceable finite resources on this planet (that become re-synthesized into polluting products to make profit out of) are in-exhaustible. It is a greed addiction (forever doubling profits) perpetrated out of the one track minds of entrepreneurial greed and power addicted gifted human beings that have lost the spiritual plot of life in the plot of greed. These very clever ego & power driven born gifted human beings, have bizarrely come to be followed and worshiped and awarded endless Media accolades in society for being unconscionably greedy and like ambition consumed politicians, possess no thought or vision for the future, only the immediate opportunistic present. Very weird logic indeed, because its human created reality and way of life, is feeding psychological disorder and social decay in our global Civilization?

Fact: To restore the spiritual plot of life and sanity to this World, Big Greedy Business and those in it, should be relegated to non-descript status in society, not placed at its head and Media worshiped. This top end of town indoctrinated ego driven self-interest and personal gain mentality for acquiring power & self-esteem, are far removed from the mature civilized qualities required to lead in society. Until those with born business acumen are able to function for the good of the whole without thinking about it, they are a constant potential to create psychological disorder and social chaos in a society. As those that have succumbed to worshiping greed and power are doing right now.

Clarification: There is no room in a civilized society (or Upstairs) for power consumed millionaire/billionaire moguls, shareholders, speculators and Corporations buying up the planet and lost in their own immature ego space in tall buildings, sumptuous boardrooms, private jets, obscene bonuses and self-interest. How much is enough? For those afflicted with its psychological delusion it will be never be enough…and therein lies the perpetuated karmic sourced problem. This contagious euphoric psychological spell is sourced to the influence of greed, conquering, acquisition and winning to acquire self-esteem and power, it is also the cause of the positive reasoning processes of the human mind becoming non-existent and delusion taking its place.

Clarification: When addictively trapped in the euphoric influence of greed & power, the human being becomes lost to any perception of right and wrong in its actions. The intuitive ability to question our own motives and actions becomes non-existent as a result. In its thoughtless place comes endless irrational justification (clever waffle), that becomes indisputable and impenetrable when those motives and actions are questioned by others. Politicians, Bureaucrats and Executives have become a prime example (bouts of amnesia and incompetence) where their accountability has come into question in Nations. It is sourced to growing narcissism and abuse of power that like greed, has become an acceptable way of life in this big business dominated civilization.

Explanation: The cause of growing abuse of power and corruption in the World, is from destructive influence that has become dominant in the primordial workings of Nature and its self-referral laws that life and its biology are sourced too. Those afflicted, become lost to the coherent qualities of those spiritual laws and illogical behaviour and delusion gains Napoleonic proportions in many who have acquired power, position and wealth in society…and especially those being worshiped in that society.

When trapped in this karmic debilitation, the ego of a dominant alpha on the blink becomes enigmatic, bland, condescending, supercilious and/or obnoxious, in-your-face, over-the-top and full of their own belief system and self-importance and loses any semblance of dignity, empathy and genuine consideration and thought for others. Humility, self-evaluation and introspection become non-existent in their thoughts, vocabulary and expression and the World truly revolves around their immature ego in its deluded lost-in-my-own euphoric power reality. Such are the narcissistic symptoms of megalomania and its psychological disorder.

About megalomania, human worship, greed, narcissism and social decay that have become rampant in this consumer civilization?
The alpha primordial survival instinct to conquer, subjugate and have power over other human beings, goes out of control when the individual becomes divorced from the ‘order out of chaos’ function of the spiritual Laws of Nature. This primordial governed instinct, then become the tool of human created karmic influence that has contaminated the function of those spiritual laws to create ‘order out of chaos’ in the primordial archetypal intelligence that orchestrates the biology of life. Megalomania, is the psychological disorder that manifests out of its karmic sourced affliction. That is why the human mind needs to be understood much more that it is at present and forms the serious nature and impetus for this article. Because out of the affliction of megalomania, comes pathological, psychological, social and behavioural disorder that becomes a norm in our human species.

It is also the animal charisma/charm/magnetism of a powerful alpha mind, to unknowingly influence the subliminal (sub-conscious) mind of others. Where they lead, others of similar quality of consciousness will instinctively be compelled to follow. This synchronicity of similar consciousness, has it primordial origins in the animal and insect kingdoms and, “birds of a feather flock together” describes its survival process at work in a social species perfectly. This natural ‘follow the leader’ phenomenon, reflects the hierarchical processes of the Laws of Nature creating order out of chaos (survival) in a social species. But, it is only the human species that is able to usurp its Laws of Nature governed process, by subjugating and exploiting others with their born primordial sourced alpha power. Such is the root cause of megalomania, that has forever plagued the all-conquering affairs of mankind.

About the spirit and psychology of a human being:
In the physical structure of ego consciousness, it is not possible to clearly see/appreciate/cognize/evaluate the qualities of the spiritual psyche of others, until one cognizes and merges with one’s own spiritual essence. In this respect, the psychology profession is found wanting in its present incomplete knowledge of the mind and claims of what is normal and what is abnormal behaviour in society. Information (statistics) gathered out of a decaying dysfunctional civilization to begin with…a bias & factor, that automatically prevents impartial analysis of its gathered information.

About contagious adult acquired unproductive habits in our children.

Are, smoking cigarettes & pot, taking chemical pills & sniffing grot and being lost in thrills & kicks as well as mental fits and blips from other promo saturated movie, television, entertainment copied behaviour in Society, predominant in the 70% of the 100% of young age groups due to the following…

1) Unable to read the ‘for adult entertainment and adult use only’ directions on advertisements, promo’s, glossy magazines, billboards, junk mail, CD & DVD covers, computer games, bongs, beverages, bottles, fast food wrappers and fizzy drink cans. Yes/No?

2) Too much pocket money to spend on the above and other must have status techno goodies with all mod cons and trendy twiddly bits. Yes/No?

3) Not enough school excursions to Hollywood and visits to Disneyland, Parliament House & Commercial Television Stations to dance with the stars. Yes/No?

4) Unable to express themselves any other way, but through copying script-writer & marketing genius instructed celebrities, film stars, sports stars, rock & roll stars and all the other human created stars that litter the communication highways…but not the heavens. Yes/No?

5) Too much adult pressure exerted on them to achieve and be crowned a winner and therefore a easily recognized up-market successful citizen in Society. Yes/No?

6) You have to be top at everything at School, or you do not receive enough brownie points and accolades to climb up the childhood ladder and claim lasting happiness and the jet setting money making top end of town created adult good life. Yes/No?

7) Poor home/social/education/communication environment, lack of mature parental love, good adult example, positive interaction and nurturing within childhood. Yes/No?

8).Unable to reach 21 fast enough to escape childhood for ever and become a successful commercial media, entertainment & product educated adult and a corresponding media accredited winner in Society to create news & closet information out of. Yes/No?

9) Cannot stop habitually worrying about all the above negatives. That have somehow been miraculously re-created into positives to acquire self-esteem and status recognition in Society. Yes/No?

10) Placating their acquired feelings of inadequacy, emptiness and unhappiness at not being able to measure up to media, education & adult expectations. Expectations coming out of a top end of town created playing field that does not understand the born disadvantaged players in the bottom end of town one little bit. Yes/No?

11) Unhappiness compounded by being written-off as losers and left behind in a top end of town created success/winning/product consumed/human worshiping Society on the script-writer & marketing genius deluded blink. Yes/No?

Q: Does the last statement, mean that Alf is advocating doom & gloom in the departure lounge for script-writers, marketing geniuses and the born gifted high achievers and so-called successful in life?

A: No, but Upstairs is. Because the gifted top end of town, have created a playing field for creating unhappiness and inequality in those who cannot possibly compete or keep up with them. Who were not born with the concentrated archetypal intelligence in their physiology that powers the activity, desires, intelligence, motivation and self-esteem of the successful top end of town. Who become lost, used, exploited, manipulated and psychologically damaged in ego & material driven ideologies to acquire self-esteem. Ideologies (created realities) that have no lasting spiritual foundation…only dissolvable material foundation to underwrite that all-important self-esteem.

So no, Alf is not recommending purgatory for the born gifted & successful in Society, but a trip to spiritual Boot Camp to acquire the Upstairs means to dissolve their delusion, earn their harp by helping others less fortunate and thus avoid purgatory in the finger pointing departure lounge. At the moment, no one is ever going to collect their harp. Least of all those in the driving seat of progress. Because the media acclaimed gifted & successful winning minority, are leading the unsuccessful losing majority in the wrong direction with their born alpha mandate to create & direct progress. A material progress that has become lost from the spiritual roots of life and the coherent value of the Laws of Nature. That should underwrite progress…and not megalomania, the ego, greed, pollution, big bucks, worshiping winners & material values and creating inequality & unhappiness in Society.

Part (2)

Are the majority of adult personality disorders, bad habits (subliminal thought patterns) and growing depression & unhappiness in Society due to the following….

1) Unable to understand Sigmund Freud and contemporaries. Yes/No.

2) Unable to find a dictionary to translate the make it up as you go along technical terminology used by the above. Affectionately called psycho babble in the bottom end of town on the receiving end. Yes/No.

3) Watching too many baddies and not enough goodies on the television and movies in childhood. Yes/No?

4) Pursuing unrealistic childhood dreams recommended by the cough, mutter and splutter successful top end of town. Yes/No?

5) Unable to acquire a piece of the 24/7 media relayed top end of town winning action and therefore, the big bucks, adulation and worshiped status that go with it. Yes/No?

6) The psychological residue from an unhappy desire frustrated inadequate childhood. Made worse by the media bombarded negatives that have been created into eulogised positives to acquire self-esteem & happiness. As listed in parts 1 & 2 of the Questionnaire. Yes/No?

Wow! this will cause an uproar and loss of earnings in the top end of town. It cannot be as simple as unhappiness at the root of the growing social devolution problem. Created from a decaying chaotic Civilization, that has fallen off the rails of spiritual evolution and is in self-destruct mode with its material & technological all-consuming progress. After all, we have all our books, expensive clinics, expert advice in glossy magazines and advertisements to prove otherwise. Even though we, the psychology profession & errant marketing geniuses, have not solved the unhappiness problem in Society yet, we are certainly making a good living. So keep coming, reading, buying products, taking pills, watching promo’s and dancing with the stars. We will save you from finger pointing St Peter in the departure lounge’…if you have money that is.

Signed complaint from 70% of the 100% to ?% of the 30% of the 100%. Its aint working, at least not according to the tea lady where I work. Plus, we aint got the money –youse got it all up your end of town.

RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

When we speak of religious beliefs we mean its theological tenets. Christianity and Islam share common ideas and beliefs having their roots in a common source–Judaism. This religion in turn derived many of its doctrines and beliefs from the Persians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, and the Sumerians. Perhaps it would be true to say that almost every religion is syncretic, though they may try very hard to cover this up.

Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Taoism are more mystical in nature and differ greatly from the Semitic religions in many basic principles; Hinduism comprising of many philosophical schools of thought, embraces various theological ideas. Some schools of Buddhism teaches that there is no permanent entity called the soul; that what is thought to be the soul is simply a collection of karmic tendencies transmittable from one incarnation to another. Their extreme views are nilhilistic in nature; however, it is doubtful whether this was implied in the teachings of the Buddha. For instance, if there is no Self, then there is also no Gautama Buddha in existence; and yet, prayers are still being directed by the faithful to this exalted being. Fundamentally, although these religions have diverse concepts regarding the soul they all point or refer to the One where all sentient beings originate. All have their own particular name or names for this Source, and all have their personal ideas regarding this Divine Essence.

Theological precepts are often tainted with the frailties of the human ego and intellect and thus offer a poor basis for the study of true religion and its revelations concerning the soul. Nevertheless, we will strive to present its beliefs with as little bias on our part as possible. This section will be brief, for to do justice to the subject would require many pages and go beyond the scope of this work.

In Christian theology it is believed that the soul prior to birth is devoid of any individuality or personality. It is only when God breathes through the nostrils of man that the soul acquires self-consciousness, and is a “living” being–and this condition of being alive is believed to remain with the soul after death. In the Book of Genesis it is recorded that,

“God made man out of the dust of the earth, breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and made man a living soul.” (Gen 2:7)

The phrase “living soul” is equated to the state of being self-conscious. According to this notion unless there is an awareness of the existence of an ego, or a self, a person or being does not truly have a soul. Such a creature is “soulless.” A person may be alive imbued with the soul-essence, the life-force, and yet remain soulless, in the sense that it is not self-aware. Some states of insanity may represent beings who are “soulless.” While the living soul is associated with the awareness of the ego, immortality is associated with the awareness of the superego, the Higher Self. This idea, though, falls in the province of metaphysical thought.

Basically, theology consider the soul to be a substance implanted in man. It is believed to be an entity divinely created and bestowed upon man when man takes his first breath. Christian theology formulated the idea that man is a divine creation, the highest of all beings, and that the whole universe was created for man alone in support of his existence.

In Christianity the terms “lost souls” or “degraded souls” are often expressed. The moral quality of a person’s life is believed to be able to affect the soul. However, from the metaphysical point of view soul-essence is immaculate, perfect, immutable and divine. What may be affected is not its essence but its conscious expression. The consciousness arising from soul essence is that which evolves and strives to reflect the image, archetype or blueprint that God created for man. This is stated emphatically in Genesis; however the statement is often interpreted literally. This blueprint is the image or divine qualities of God. It does not refer to form but to the inner nature of the life-essence.

The Hindus, generally speaking, believe the soul to be an entity that resides in the physical body and is subjected to reincarnation in accord with its karma. The Upanishads says that, “The Supreme Person, of the size of the thumb, dwells forever in the heart of all human beings.” Its esoteric wisdom, moreover, tells us that the immaterial man is constituted of various principles each having their own particular function. The highest principle within the microcosm of man is the Atma, or according to others, the Paratman.

In the Bhagavad Gita, the microcosm is represented by Krishna, Arjuna, the carriage, and the horses. Krishna is the Spirit, the highest aspect of man; Arjuna the evolving soul; the carriage the mind; and the horses the senses. Graphically five horses are often represented. They represent the senses of man through which the vital force escapes and runs uncontrolled. In yoga and esoteric practices the senses are subdued so that the vital force may be directed within to awaken the sluggish Arjuna. Krishna is the guide that assists Arjuna in this project.

ANCIENT BELIEFS

As we mentioned before, the belief in the survival of the soul after death goes way back to the earliest development of humankind. Primitive Neanderthal tribes, for instance, would bury food, tools, and weapons along with the corpses of their departed in order to provide them with the bare necessities in the afterlife. This custom still survive in some cultures and is a clear indication that not only is soul survival believed in but that the afterlife as a continuation of the sort of life lived in the physical world is likewise presumed.

Animism was the prevailing belief among prehistoric man. Everything was considered alive and pervaded with a soul-force that even gave inanimate objects a consciousness and an intelligence of some kind. Stars in particular were believed to be souls long dead and living in heaven. To the primitive mind, the sky or firmaments were considered to be heaven, just as hell was thought to lie beneath the earth.

That the soul “resided” and functioned in the physical body, a location was sought for its residence. Some believed the heart to be the organ of the soul, others pointed to the head. Some primitive cultures thought that the blood was the vehicle of the soul–that the blood carried soul-substances to every part of the body. The demon Mephistopheles in a play written by Goethe (1749-1832) declares the blood to be a “curious thing.” The belief that the blood is the vehicle of the soul is not without foundation, however. If the soul in this context is considered to be the life-force, prana, chi, or even oxygen, one can only surmise how the primitive mind intuited this scientific fact. Scientifically, it has been noticed that blood-transfusion often causes a temporary change in character in the person receiving the donor’s blood. Could it be that blood is impregnated with one’s soul-characteristics? As the blood was associated with the soul, many primitive tribes such as the Scythians evolved the custom of drinking the blood of their enemies or victims in order to absorb their courage, strength, power, and abilities. The custom of forming blood-brothers is also based upon the belief in the importance of the blood as related to the soul, and its transcendence over fleshly ties. Members forming blood-brothers would drink the blood of fellow members thus forming a soul-bond overriding the normal flesh-and-blood relationships.

The ancients often depicted the soul as a bird often human headed, perhaps referring to its ability to fly. The Aztecs, ancient Greeks and Egyptians among the many ancient races, for instance, often portrayed the souls of their dead in murals and pottery as a winged bird taking flight from its lifeless corpse. Eagles, hawks, doves, peacocks and phoenixes were often used to represent the soul.

Not only the head, heart, and blood were believed to be the seat of the soul, but likewise the breath. Believing that the breath is associated with the soul and life, the aborigines of Papua New Guinea would breathe through tubes into effigies of their forefathers in order to confer a certain vitality to their departed souls. This is a magical practice based on the law of similarity. Many tribal cultures practiced the placement of obstructions in the nostrils of their dying ones as a last effort to saving their lives. This they believe would effectively prevent the soul from escaping and causing the death of the body.

It is believed among ancient and savage people that the soul being associated with the life force, illnesses or feebleness of the physical body are caused by the escape of the soul from the gross form. In extreme cases the soul force was “captured” by some evil spirit and it was the task of the shaman, the tribal witch-doctor to recapture the soul and restore it to the corporeal body. The ability of the shaman to dissociate his incorporeal aspect from the gross form supposedly facilitated this sort of work.

The Ancients’ concept of the soul has evolved throughout the ages, and even now our scientific understanding is constantly in a state of change. Our conceptions regarding the soul is associated with our various notions regarding God. As man evolves so does his awareness of the soul and his Source. Man has formed many ideas regarding the nature of his creator. In this context it can be seen that the phrase, “God creates man, and man creates God” has a basis in truth.

Among the ancient cultures, the Egyptians and Hindus were the most advanced in their understanding of the soul. We in particular refer to their mystics, hierophants, and sages. They regarded man as a microcosm with many aspects, both material and incorporeal, with each aspect having its own function to play in the life and destiny of the soul. Their many teachings live on today in contemporary metaphysico-occult philosophy. The ancient Greek philosophers and sages such as Thales, Plato and Pythagoras derived much of their occult knowledge from these wise priests of the Orient.

SCIENTIFIC VIEWS

Along the scientific vein, certain schools of thought believe the self or ego to be a by-product of a brain function, and yet what gives rise to this function is not known, and only given an educational guess. The section of the brain that “causes” a sense of self is likewise not yet discovered. This concept of the “brain causes consciousness” is fundamentally the viewpoint of the mechanists that sees man as merely a machine. The above concept is flawed, however, because portions of the brain have been known to be destroyed and yet the presence of a sense of self still remained. In the condition known as hydrocephalus, for instance, large sections of the cerebral cortex may be destroyed or missing, being filled instead with cerebro-spinal fluid, and yet individuals suffering from such a condition may lead normal lives without suspecting their blight. They may even have an I.Q. above average.

The mechanists, Freud (1856-1939) among them, claim that our behavioral actions are automatic responses to external stimuli, and that life is a result of the right combination of chemicals derived from food and oxygen. That an animating force exists to vitalize the organism they may concede but this force is looked upon as a physical energy akin to electricity. The mechanistic theory describes how perception takes place through the stimulation of the senses that creates nerve impulses, and how these nerve impulses travel to the sections of the brain related to the senses, and how they form sensations; but the theory does not consider the real perceiver that tries to make sense of the sensations. To mechanists, the perceiver is thought to be one of the functions of the cerebral cortex. In short, the mechanistic concept leaves no room for the existence of the soul. To a mechanist the purported existence of the soul is considered as an absurdity.

If the eminent neuropsychologist Karl Lashley (1890-1958), author of Brain Mechanisms and Intelligence, after years of research could not discover the seat of memory in the brain, how much more difficult would it be to discover the seat of the self or soul–not withstanding Descartes’ (1596-1650) assertion that the pineal gland is its locus. This French philosopher and mathematician also declared, “cogito, ergo sum,” or “I think, therefore I am” thus implying that the Self arises into existence as a result of thought, or as a function of the mind. Nevertheless, mystics have proved to themselves the possibility of transcending thoughts and yet remaining in existence, and possessing an exalted sense of Self, unified with the Cosmos. The mystic’s standpoint is supported by Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980), French philosopher and writer. To Sartre, existence does not depend on the functions of the mind, that a being does not exist simply because it thinks. According to Sartre, existence precedes the mind–or thinking.

Rene Descartes’ statement is therefore erroneous, or perhaps our interpretation of his statement is wrong. “I think, because I am” would be closer to the truth. In spite of this, Descartes was somewhat accurate in believing that the pineal gland plays an important role in man’s occult physiology as we shall see later when we discuss the metaphysical purview.

Mainstream science may disavow the existence of the soul on the pretext of its immateriality, undetected by their instruments; and yet, matter in its actual state in similarly immaterial. This was the proposition of Leibniz (1646-1716), the German philosopher, who considered matter as a manifestation of Mind–”a stupid variety of mind.” To explain this graphically, for instance, what we call concrete matter is actually made up of moving molecules. Molecules in turn are made up of whirling atoms, and these are composed of even smaller particles. Should these sub-atomic particles be magnified “nothing” would be found. Matter, is therefore, made up of “emptiness.” We may call this void “energy,” “mind,” or “spirit,” but whatever we call it, the fact remains that matter is actually as insubstantial as the soul. If the reality of one is accepted why not the other? The many particles composing matter are filled with this “nothing,” or space. Another curious fact is that if we were to remove the space inherent within a human body, for instance, and all the “particles” united, the total compaction would result in a piece of matter no larger than a mite of dust. Leibniz’s theory is also paralleled by the thoughts of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), the American Trancendentalist. According to Emerson matter is “a phenomenon, not a substance.” He also considered the material world to be,

“a divine dream, from which we may presently awake to the glories and certainties of day.”

Science informs us that nothing is destroyed. That matter is just energy possessing a certain structure and magnetic-field. It is acknowledged that everything in existence is made up of energy. Now as the existence of consciousness and a sense of self are undeniable, they should be thought of as indestructible as well, for Science has already implied the idea in its equations. So why then does Science not accept the possible existence of disembodied consciousness–the soul?–because it cannot be perceived? Quiet an absurdity, really–even while embodied the Self cannot be seen. Can you see your Self?

From whence does the sense of self-identity come? It seems that mainstream science is still a long way in finding this one out. However, new paradigms are being formulated by open-minded scientists who are now considering the world-view of eastern mystics in conjunction with the new developments and discoveries in the field of physics and psychology. The theories of quantum physics and transpersonal psychology are closing the gap between essential religion and conventional science. Regarding the mystery of the Self in relation to the brain we are reminded of the words of the researcher and scientist George Buletza who said in the Rosicrucian Digest (Sept. 1983) that,

“Rather than the brain producing Self, it is the other way around. The brain is a product of Self, of Being ever striving to be. The brain is the incredibly fine instrument created by Self in the process of expressing its own nature . . .”

It has been observed in many laboratory experiments all over the world that human consciousness reveals an ability to extend itself beyond the boundaries of the brain and body, that somehow it may perceive or influence events at distant places. Such mental activities suggests to some scientific observers that consciousness may exist independent of the corporeal form.

Many branches of science such as physics, psychology, astrophysics, and biology, are investigating the soul, and each has their own particular methods of inquiry. Perhaps the most important branch of science that has been developed in recent times, relatively speaking, is parapsychology.

Parapsychology

Parapsychology is that branch of science that studies the nature of psychic or paranormal phenomena. Its scope of investigation covers a wide range of subjects: for instance, ESP, hauntings, poltergeist activity, Near-Death Experience, Out-of-the-Body Experience, UFOs, Strange Creatures, Weird Phenomena, etc. There are now many institutes investigating, studying, and teaching this branch of science. The word “parapsychologist” is often misunderstood. Many people seem to think that being a parapsychologist is synonymous to being psychic. This is erroneous. A psychic may not be a parapsychologist, and vice versa. A psychic is someone who perceives impressions through higher senses not ordinarily registered by the physical senses. Psychics may not generally understand the impressions that they register, and may simply believe and be fooled by illusions and appearances. A parapsychologist seeks to understand unusual phenomena through scientific analysis, and by using empirical methods with the aid of carefully devised instruments. A mystically inclined metaphysician, on the other-hand, basically strives to understand phenomena with the aid of his intellect, intuition, and other higher faculties. The parapsychologist’s basic methods are three-dimensional, the psychic’s four-dimensional, and the mystic-metaphysician’s, five-dimensional, or even higher.

To illustrate the difference between a paranormal and a metaphysician’s understanding of phenomena, we will just illustrate one out of many. As an example, supposing a psychic were to receive impressions of an impending disaster, he would consider it to be truth and proclaim it to others. He would make all sorts of predictions anent the impressions that was registered in his mind. He would consider it as a revelation of God.

The metaphysician on the other hand, knowing Cosmic and natural laws, understands the impressions received to possibly be thought-forms-mind creations of fearful beings. Man radiates thoughts, and these thoughts, perhaps without a basis of truth, are received by psychics. The unfortunate thing in all of this is that thoughts are creative. What we habitually think about with intense emotion have a tendency to materialize. So dire predictions often come true; however it does not have to be. We have to learn to eliminate fear. When psychics make predictions they are instilling and intensifying fear among the masses. Now this is a vicious cycle. When people are made fearful by psychics they begin to imagine more catastrophic horrors and these thoughts radiate out again to susceptible psychics who repeat the whole procedure over again. The momentum eventually grows until it manifests physically.

However, let us not digress too far and return to our subject: Parapsychology has established various avenues of research for determining the reality of the soul and the survival of personal consciousness. Although the results of their research are inconclusive by the standards of mainstream science, parapsychologists have been successful in acquiring evidence and vital knowledge that when analyzed seemingly validates the age-old belief in the existence of the soul and its survival of bodily death. Nevertheless, parapsychologists have formulated various theories as to their findings, not all of which aligns with the traditional view of the soul. It is also important to note that the term “soul” is rarely used in mainstream science or parapsychology. The terms “mind,” “consciousness,” and “personality” are often used instead.

The darkness was too deep, the silence was too dead. The lights flickered as if winking at him, the subliminal whispering goodbye to him. Also goodnight because, soon, they were to be dead – along with the still night.

With his hair darker than his black eyes, gently rubbing his snotty nose, he gazed out the ocean as the waves combed the shore. It sounded like a lullaby; as the waves gently hit the rocks like drumsticks against a drum.

He chuckled uncontrollably like hiccuping, thinking of how in grade school they used to say ‘friends before money’.

Money bought him this nice prison cell, this 4×10 prison cell overlooking the massive ocean which looked like dark oil.

He thought about Patrice; how he was the most important person in her life. She was The Chosen One, she loved him so much she died for him – what an exulted thing she committed!

He thought about her in that white dress, the way her eyes reflected like a knife, their shade so pale that tears that were falling were the same color as her eyes. Mimicking his heartbeats, not a beat out of rhythm.

The light went out, nothing left to see now but the stars trapped in the sky. He was just as strapped in as the stars. Tomorrow was the day to brake out, tell the world what he really was! Fame, fame, fame – newspapers will be printing, bigger than any famous stuck-up, no-good loser. (jejune) characters that are going to wish they were him.

He looked down at his concrete whole, for the first time after escaping. Going to be that no good, cop that was jealous of his fame, who got him in this mess in the first place! He put his painting back to the whole when he heard the words starting.

I-I-I wa…w-want a cigarette! hey ! -the voice stuttered, as if an earthquake was in his voice.

He looked over to find a young 19-year-old Jim there. He killed his parents for calling him ‘good old chubs’. The killer gazed at him, his stomach sunk into the bars as far as they went. Sections of fat rolled over the bars. Pure fat cells, just flapping as if it wanted to fly away. It was clear that nothing on this boy was capable of flying, or even clearly being able to lift past it’s gravity.

P-pa pa-a pap leas- Jim jeered, as if protesting.

The killer began singing, chanting in a voice ‘I shot the sheriff but I didnt shoot no deputy, oh no! oh!
I shot the sheriff, but I didnt shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, oo-ooh’.

Yeah! All around in my hometown,
They’re tryin’ to track me down;
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy.

But I say ‘Have a cigarette! Chubs
in what little light there was to light up the room, the killer grabbed a cigarette, lit it and began to smoke.

Jim stared at him as if he were to do a trick, breaths quickening. He approached with his arms out, his stuttering turning to pronunciations a newborn could make. Then the killer’s eyes lit up like a candle with rage, remembering: ‘no distractions till then’.

He could feel his blood boil.. He wanted to compress his face into the bars. Make his skull into mash potatoes. Watch thin blood pour, to the floor. Same color as thin, crimson, Chianti wine.

Yet, this caged bird would sing again. Life outside the big house was looking to pulchritudinous.

He tossed the cigarette right after getting a whiff, the red light rolled across the floor and that was going to be him. He was going to roll away; no more gambling for cigarettes, it was real money now!

It made him think of the deadman’s hand, aces and 8s. They call it deadman’s hand because a man was killed for winning when a guy bet a lease on his house. Bam shot him, for having 8s and aces in his hand, back in cowboy times.

The cop that got him here was going to get dealt a deadman’s hand now.

“C.C., you do remember that we are looking at things through our soul’s eyes, ken? Yes?” Moriya asked without pausing. “Then, although these things are here – now, right in front of us, the notion of *eternity* means that everything has existed from time immemorial.

What happens is that when the moment is karmically ripe, we become suddenly aware of the existence of certain things, of certain thoughts and of certain symbols. Some call that a ‘ha-ha’ or a eureka moment, but really, it is not as if these symbolic things have only just now popped up out of nowhere. They have been there, right under our nose, from the moment of our birth.”

The hoop pines on the esplanade, branches turned up like fingers towards the darkened afternoon sky, sway slowly through the sea wind.

The sounds I hear through the open windows of this rented beachfront apartment are those of the rain pelting down; those of the sea roaring in her pewter grey, pre-storm mode and those made by the sluicing of car tyres seven floors below. A butcher bird, feet gripped around the railing of the balcony, is all fluffed up. Beak lifted to the sky, she calls out a vehement and repetitive two-tone high-pitched warble. What is this bird saying? To whom is she calling out?

I do know that because of the black and white of her feathers, this bird is a messenger intended to remind me that, for what remains of this day and beyond – while my darling and I are holidaying in this beach resort – I need to make balance a priority. Beyond this, I will never get to know what else this little butcher bird was calling out.

Well, actually, this is not quite true.

Seven floors above the esplanade = the elevated position of the 7th Chakra – looking from soul’s eyes

A butcher bird = butcher = a person who sells meat – to kill = the need to curb my/our lower *animalistic* desires of the flesh

What is this bird saying? = “overcome your base instincts.”

To whom is she calling out? = to me, of course, as spiritual messages are always intended for the one who perceives them. This message, like all others, will be repeated, albeit differently, more loudly, more painfully until I find a way to act on it.

The bottom line is that while I enjoy our long walks on the beach, a glass of chilled pinot gris at our favorite beach cafe and contemplate the pattern of waves rolling in,

I must also remember the priorities of one on The Path.

Not long ago, I wrote something to Moriya about a sunflower on our patio and how beautiful it was with its large open face fringed by bright yellow petals.

“So much more interesting to me than a rose all curled up on herself, even if her enduring glam status dates back to millions of years B.C.”

“C.C., you have to be aware every minute of every day. Yes, the sunflower is beautiful,” Moriya replied by return mail, “but you forget the symbolism of this flower.

A sunflower is the motif of the sun shining large and round within our mind. It is the symbol of turning to follow the Light. It symbolizes our crown chakra.

You must remember to be aware that all you are attracted to – or repelled by – is a message brought to you by your soul.

Keep observing to catch each of her messages. Don’t fall back into sleep-walking mode. Take your diary with you on the vacation and write your thoughts, your emotions and experiences.

Bring back all that you notice and we will have a look at it together. Be awake.”

The big deal is that all the messages, signs or symbols we do not see, little blind

mice that we are, amount to so many arrows pointing to the “Yellow Brick Road” we need to be on.

They are the emergency light pinpoints that line the central aisle of an airplane, the ones intended to guide us in the advent of a catastrophe.

The spiritual signs of the sort we are going to explore in this file are as recognizable as the Nazca lines scarred into the Pampa Colorada of Peru. Assumed to be at least 1500 years old, they remain an enigma that can only be deconstructed from the air, which is symbolic of the *elevated* spiritual position our soul aspires for us to reach … one day.

When we are blind to the world of messages around us, we talk about coincidences, good luck or bad luck, good days and bad days and we scratch our head wondering why and how we have ended up in any one particular situation. Maybe we cry,

maybe we shrug, maybe laugh but, as sure as the moon never sets, we eventually move on and further into something akin to tunnel vision or selective blindness.

We do not see for looking.

We do not SEE the many flags waved at us and, sure enough, we soon get another opportunity to say, “What the …” for it is only by looking through our soul’s eyes – from an elevated position – that we can create meaning out of our life’s landscape.

If the choice is between getting some sort of understanding as to why things *happen* to us as they do – even in the absence of total proof – or relying on holy water, crystals and tumble stones, Feng Shui water fountains, reciting of mantras while driving to work or having faith in our favorite talisman, pet rock, neighbourhood healer, hermit or quack – I have made my choice.

Messages – in the form of signs and symbols, names and thousands of words and images – swirl around each and every one of us, all of the time, in our wakeful moments and in our sleep.

Because these signs are not dramatic signs such as apparitions or strange

manifestations; because we, as a civilization, have lost the ability to recognize them, they remain unnoticed.

Our brain recognizes spectacular, hi-glam, hi-visibility meaningful moments, but our brain simply does not interpret the mundane and the minute signs embedded in the continuous string of moments that make up our days and our nights – year after year after year – from birth to death. Yet, like rain drops hanging precariously off our clothes line side by side, they are connected to each other; they are tangible and they carry meaning.

It is unhelpful to imagine a separation between work and play; between night and day; between our private life and our public life; between the many hats that we wear.

As Moriya says, “While we are standing with our physical body on stable ground in the physical world, our thoughts/feelings exist in Astral realm, and at the same time our higher spiritual attributes, specifically unconditional love, exist in much higher realms, from which comes down all the messages.

“We live at the same time in many worlds and the ability to switch between them in order to make good decisions, good deeds, good feelings, good Karma depends on our state of evolution.”

When we are limited to seeing life through physical eyes, we can see only *gross matter*. Thus, the range of our interactions with our fellow human beings generally includes a degree of exploitation, competition, envy and greed. Even our *loved ones* we love mechanically for we seldom accept them – dynamically – as they are. The tender-loving care we give them is often conditional on their good behaviour. And even if we do keep loving the unlovable because we care or because we do not dare sever the link, we make that our cross to bear in this lifetime.

The compensation for our apparent selflessness is the warm display of sympathy and public kudos we get in return from our friends and social services who understand our plight – the next best thing after love.

We are unable to see others, *them*, as brothers and sisters, which is why inevitably we end up in the familiar game of Us vs Them while Me, I, Mine all come in at number 1.

We are unable to see strangers or even acquaintances as worthy of the same *good life* as we are – of being a part of our world. That is because we are indeed separate beings, held separate from each other by our skin, while on the higher realms, energetically, we are inseparable – just like the sun’s rays are inseparable, or the gusts and the breeze are inseparable from the air. Just like the waves are not separate. Just like there are no big drops and no little drops to be found inside the sea because there are no drops – all there is, is the sea.

Every moment, pleasant or not, is simply another stitch in the tapestry of our lives. Even when the thread gets knotted up, it’s only another stitch. And it, too, shall find its place in the weave of the tapestry.

It is also unhelpful to think that we live in a concrete world where all that matters is material; that all that is abstract is obscure; that all that is invisible to us does not exist.

Our human brain has been trained to derive meaning from all that comes within our awareness.

Grey clouds in the sky warn us of incoming rain.

A flag stands as pride of a country. At half-mast, it stands for mourning.

Barbed wire symbolizes loss of freedom, while a dove symbolizes love and freedom. We understand the tools represented by each of the icons on our desktop.

We know what a thumbs-up means, just as we understand the symbolism of a fist raised in defiance, which is different from a fist pumping the air in exhilaration.

A baby symbolizes life and softness as well as unconditional love and so does a puppy dog.

Strangely, diamonds evoke enduring love.

Feathers make us think of Native American Indians and the flight of our soul. Typically, a policeperson symbolizes protection.

A yellow rose symbolizes friendship. Interestingly, although a red rose has come to signify true love, red being the color of our lowest chakra – the one from which stem our primitive instincts and our knee-jerks – it is no wonder that true love tends to wither quickly.

The color green represents nature and wellbeing, as well as jealousy, while the little green person inside the traffic light tells us when it is safe for us, pedestrians, to cross the street.

In reality, everything and everyone who comes directly within our line of vision to connect with us, personally, is a message-carrier that, as clearly as any other semiotic code, has a meaning that is intended for us – personally. Whatever comes to our awareness wants us to be aware of it. If we are not aware, we are asleep at the wheel, and if we are asleep at the wheel, the question worth asking is What, then, is driving us?

Beyond guiding us towards our potential, symbolic signs and occurrences are sent to us to remind us, to encourage us, to confirm that, spiritually, we are on the right track. They are also sent to us to warn us when we are on the wrong track.

Before we begin looking specifically at dream deconstruction [intentionally set up as an appendix to this file and titled How We Need To See], it is important to get a general understanding of the symbols that appear in our mindful, wakeful moments. Until we do, we are no more evolved than the toddler roaming from room to room who only becomes aware of the dangers and traps, represented by the myriad of objects around her, once they have caused her pain.

The sooner she learns that the wiggling of her mother’s index finger means, “No”; that the corners of the coffee table symbolize pain, along with buttons popped in her mouth; reaching for the iron cord, and exploring the content of the cabinet under the sink, the sooner she will experience less avoidable pain and more spontaneous rewards.

As a way to introduce the simple but pervasive nature of symbols in our day-to-day lives, I will recount a moment shared by Jayne, a cyber friend of mine.

Weeks and weeks earlier, I had recommended to this young woman that she find a copy of Elizabeth Haich’s book, “Initiation”. Unable to find a copy locally, she spotted the book’s listing on Amazon.com and, as she said, she could have ordered the book there and then. Because she was in the process of moving and could not be sure of the delivery date, she didn’t.

Then, many weeks later while out to meet with a real estate agent to view what would soon become her new house, Jayne arrived early and whiled the time away in a café. Opposite this café, she spotted an old second-hand bookstore, so she wandered across to have a look with, she said, “Elizabeth Haich’s book specifically in mind”.

As Jayne walked through the door, she found herself in a small room divided down the middle by a bookshelf. She looked at the books nearest her.

“Lo and behold, it was the spiritual section,” she said, “and I scanned the shelves for the white spine of the cover I had seen on Amazon and BAM – literally in under one minute after I had entered the shop, I was pulling a copy of “Initiation” from the shelves.” Perhaps tongue in cheek, Jayne added, “I took that as a sign that we had indeed found the right house in the right area etc.”

This lovely story indicates how Karma works: nothing *timely* can move forward or be cracked open until we are ready to make a time and space for it. We can only do that by being aware of our small and deceptively innocuous moments. If we blank out a second too long, we’ve missed out.

By day, a teacher of Senior English and French in Brisbane, Australia, and, by night, first a writer of novels and now a writer of spiritual material, I am on a quest of sorts ? I am searching for a connection to my soul, right here, right now.
