I saw a tree with birds beside green leaves
In groups they take off reaching for clouds
But just to land again upon this planet of slobs
slaves the to limbs that hold them captive
Why is it that once we are free, we’re scared?
Once your feet lift from the ground,
We grow insecure, and like a powerful magnet
We are sucked right back down to land
With our roots planted deep into the ground
I saw a fly swarming around my friends and I
He’d take off but just to land beside on my hand
And there I felt a life that is short lived, like mine
He sits with me, with a few hours remaining
Poor fly, thinking I am worth a moment of his life
I would be the fly that’d die in the sky, no wait!
I am the one who returns every single time, what a pity
I am the one who is too scared to spread my wings
Once I am only a mere two feet above the concrete
I gently float back down, wishing only to start all over
I fear risking broken bones, and a broken heart
Even if my dreams were to slap me across the face
I wouldn’t follow. For when given the chance,
My hopes seem to always fly just too damn high
There is a type
“slaves the to limbs that hold them captive”

Thank you, but i ment that I wanted advice for the poem, not for myself. But thank you again.

I walked over to an empty desk and dropped my bag on the ground next to me. We hadn’t been assigned lockers yet so my bag was heavy with books and I was glad to put it down on the cold plastic floor of my science classroom. I watched Miss Alderton walk over to the board and lean back against it, waiting for the class to settle down.
“Class,” she said calmly, “Class!” Oh God, I thought to myself, she’s strict.
“Good morning, girls, I’m sure you are all aware of my name, Miss Alderton. I would like to start the day with going over what we will be doing this term and then move on to a test to see how much you know.” I sighed and sunk into my chair, not even bothering to hear what we’d be doing the following day, let alone the whole term. Instead, I drew small doodles in the corner of the desk I was sitting in. I drew a girl, me, and a bird, Floss, and an older girl, Ka-
“Who exactly is that drawing graffiti all over school property?” Miss Alderton thundered in my direction. I looked up, startled – I had gotten used to the background hum of her talking to the class. “Uhm, s-sorry, I was just, uhm…” I trailed off, but through my hair I looked her in the eye. My sister, Katie, had told me once that while she was my age, whenever a teacher would tell her off she would cry, right in front of the class. There was no way I was going to do that. “Sorry, Miss Alderton, I won’t do it again.” It came out a little snappier and ruder than I had meant it to be, and I got given a lunch time detention. It also meant that for rest of the lesson, even in the test, she kept an eye on me so that I was forced to listen to all the stuff she talked about and I couldn’t even draw Katie’s second eye in my desk-doodle.
The test was easy – the lunch time detention wasn’t.
“Now, you know why you’re here, don’t you, Jonie?” I sighed. “Miss Alderton – my name is Jane. Not Jonie. And yes, I do know why I’m here. I was rude, and I also drew on my desk. I told you – I’m sorry.” Miss Alderton was about to give me another lecture, when she finally put two and two together.
“Jane, of course,” she said, before taking a deep breath to yell at me, “well. Jane. Let me tell you that you cannot just go ‘round and-” Pause. “Wait, Jane, Jane… Clifton? Oh you’re Katie’s sister! Katherine Clifton’s sister! Little Jane Clifton herself! Let me tell you, Jane that your sister didn’t once step inside the detention hall her whole schooling life, and you’ve just arrived in here and it’s your first day!” Oh God. Lord, please, please let a lightning bolt come straight through the ceiling and hit her, I just can’t take this! She carried on for what seemed like years, in this strangely happy way. It was as if she’d been waiting to meet me ever since Katie first mentioned me when she was thirteen and I was just eight years of age.
When I eventually got out of detention, there was still a good ten minutes left before I’d have to go back to class, so I looked around for my friend, Brandi. Not in the library, not on the field, not playing netball, not sitting in the sunshine on the concrete steps leading up towards the main block. Where the heck are you, Brandi? I thought to myself as I walked in big circles around the school, not giving up hope yet of seeing her before the end of lunch. It was on my third loop around the school when I finally saw her. She was sitting on a fence by herself. Running, I went up to join her. “Brandi!”
“Jane! Hey, how are you? Paige in my math class told me you’d got detention or something.” I shrugged.
“No big deal, right? I was fine. It was just Miss Alderton getting into a fit about nothing, honest.”
“Oh. I haven’t had Miss Alderton yet. She’s science, right? God, I hate her already.”
Thank you so much to everyone who replied

It was time to shed off those layers of clothes and turn off the furnace. This was my favorite time of the year. The robins were chirping and the buds were forming on the trees. This year it was my desire to turn my garden into my sanctuary.

Starting with planting the flowers, which I take great pride in, to turning my lawn into looking like a golf course. By arranging the shrubs, bushes and flowers, it was very pleasant to look at. With the new patio furniture and grill, I thought everything was in place.

Something was missing and I couldn’t put my finger on it. As I would sit in my comfy lounge chair reading a book, I was still edgy not relaxed. Turning on the stereo, placing the lighting in just the right direction and sipping a cool drink, just didn’t put me in the right mood.

Then it dawned on me what I was yearning for. It was quite simple my body wanted to be around water. A swimming pool or hot tub was not an option since it would take up the entire yard. Looking through home decorating magazines, it was there I found that special touch that was needed. The wall mounted outdoor fountain.

Wall mounted garden fountains achieve the same effect as any other fountain. The serenity and tranquility of water trickling down is an essential element to any outdoor setting. The element of water enhances any environment by just its visual presence. These fountains seem to touch the human spirit deeply and personal. The sound that comes from a fountain is perfect to help you unwind at the end of a busy day. It is soothing and relaxing which creates peace and harmony.

The two most common materials are cast stone concrete and fiberglass. The fiberglass models have a sand stone finish and weigh less for shipping purposes and are less expensive. There are various styles that will fit with anyone’s decor. Whether you want a traditional or contemporary model it is easily located. If you are on a tight budget try wall mounted garden fountains made of plastic or resin. Whatever material you choose, they are sure to add class and sophistication to your out door area.

Every imaginable color, illumination, size and theme is available for all variety of tastes and needs. Some popular themes are animals, birds, fish and biblical characters. The size you purchase strictly depends on where it will be mounted. They have these fountains for walls, fences, alcoves and trees. Don’t be surprised if a bird swoops down for a drink.

Outdoor wall mounted fountains help clean the air and remove harmful pollutants. They also help add humidity into the air which is ideal for keeping your flowers and plants healthy.

A small amount of regular maintenance will allow you to enjoy your fountain for many years. Simply spray it down with a garden hose, keep the basin free of debris and in winter remove the pump and keep it dry. Most come with easy to follow installation instructions and do not require a professional to install it. You just need to make certain that you conceal the pump and hosing.

If you wish to make the fountain the focal point of your garden, get creative. Add some rocks or cut flowers to the water. Put some lights near it so it sparkles and to unleash those senses add some aromatherapy oil to the basin Your friends and family will admire your fountain as a masterpiece of sight, smell and sound.

You might be pondering whether to go for whimsical or an ornate design. Let me assure you that it does not matter. They will all sooth, ease your mind and stimulate the senses. This is a must for your summer pleasure.

My Garden
The stone is cracked, water no longer flows from the once intricate fountain
The fresh chromatic hyacinths and roses are withered and died
Soil cracks with each foot step
It has become a place without the relief of water
The only thing thriving are the hedges, seemingly dead yet growing, enclosing me in
The once open wrought iron gate has been closed and locked
Did I grow these hedges, close the gate?
Did I kill the life that used to surround me?
Suddenly I see fingers playing with the lock on the gate
The hedges shrink
The rusty gate swings open
After each step she takes more life grows
A purple hyacinth brings forward a buzzing humming bird
Her smile repairs the cracks in the concrete, almost magic
Water begins to flow as I recognize her
Soft green grass pads my dirty soles as I run towards her
I thought my garden was impenetrable, completely locked, but I forgot one thing
I gave my best friend the key
it should be dried instead of died

There hasn’t been even a moment to just perch so you’ve been on your feet the entire day.

You feel like your poor feet have walked you around the world and back again. Now if you will take just a moment and imagine its bed time and you have to sleep standing up and on your feet. Pretty miserable thought isn’t it.

Can you imagine life like that? Can you imagine the foot and leg problems you might incur? Your parrot faces that exact problem. It’s up to us as owners to be certain we do everything possible to provide comfort through options to our pet birds.

Your bird, the wild version is free to roam where and how he wants. Your bird is able to pick his perches as his wants would indicate. However this is not so for the bird living in the living room cage. His perches are all up to you. Just like the wild bird your pet bird needs options.

Consider These About Perches.

1. The Circumfrence Of The Perch:

Pay attention here. If the birds feet are to flat the perch is to large. If the birds feet wrap around the perch and toes touch the perch is to small. The trick is to supply a number of sizes and varying shapes and materials that allow the bird to find his own comfort level at any given time.

2. Commercial Wooden Dowels:

There is nothing wrong with the commercial dowels other than the consistent shape and uniform circumference. The use of which gives the bird few options. If you must use commercial dowel perches make sure there are several sizing options available for the bird.

It is a great idea to have a perch of hard wood, maybe the highest one. This will provide a stable platform for sleeping. If you can find a suitable hard wood tree branch to hang from the top of the cage having several different size branches they make excellent perches and will help.

3. Concrete Perches Certainly Are Useful:

The concrete will help keep the birds nails trimmed. However they are not naturally a comfortable perch and should only be used when there are plenty of proper wooden perches available. What the perch is made of is almost as important as size.

4. Perch Placement:

There should be plenty of space between the perches and they should use the entire heigth of the cage. Starting at the level of bowls and dishes and going upward. In order to avoid injury to the bird make sure of adequate spacing between the perches. Most birds prefer sleeping on the higher perches. Leave room up high making sure the birds head is not crowded against the top of the cage. If your bird has long tail like a macaw be sure the perch placement does not allow the tail contact with the cage or other perches.

It is up to us to provide the proper perches for our birds. It is important to the birds health and safety. The sizes and shapes of perches are important whether your bird is large or a tiny finch. Take the time to learn to pick them right.

Ryleigh Cantrell has owned his blue and gold Macaw (Shadow) since 1978.
