The first step in selecting the appropriate cleaning equipment is to identify the different surfaces in your house and even your office that will usually need to be cleaned. Surfaces consist of hardwood floors, carpeted areas, bathroom tiles, windows, and concrete. Hardwood floors are typically cleaned by floor upright brooms made of corn fibers or plastic to remove dust, cobwebs, pet hair and the like. You can also utilize floor polishers to strip the floor of dirt and grime. This will leave your hardwood floors clean and glossy. You can also use a vacuum to get rid of dirt and grime and mops for damp cleaning to remove dust and dirt.

Carpeted areas are cleaned by vacuums for normal cleaning such as removing dirt, pet hair and stains. You can also rent steam cleaners for deep cleaning. Steam cleaners are especially useful for stains or dirt that has already set-in your carpet. You can also use brushes for small areas that need to be cleaned of stains or spots. Bathroom tiles are cleaned with mops, plastic brooms, and push brooms. Windows can be cleaned using pressure washing equipment such as a hose. You can also use squeegees and rubber brushes. Scrapers and blades are especially useful for removing dried bird droppings, which is a common problem. For higher windows, a T-Bar with an extension pole can be used to reach and clean out of the reach areas.

Concrete can be cleaned by push brooms for hallways or big areas, heavy duty brooms for streets, garage, and a lot more, and a floor furnisher. Choosing the right cleaning equipment for different surfaces is not difficult. You can even experiment on using the different materials on other surfaces as long as you are sure that it will not make any scratches or cause more damage. How can you find the right broom for your floors? Brooms come in several sizes and materials. There are three common sweep brooms, and they are the corn and up-right broom, the floor brush, and the street broom or heavy duty broom. Brush up on your broom information by taking notes on what their uses and differences are.

The corn and up-right broom is the most common type of floor broom used in cleaning surfaces inside the house. It is made of different materials so each kind is specifically fashioned for particular surfaces or floors. The corn bristle fiber broom with hair-like follicles is used to remove dust on the floor while the corn bristle fiber broom made with yucca fiber is designed to sweep concrete floors. Then there are up-right brooms made of plastic. These include angled brooms with short and long fibers that outline an angle, janitor broom, lobby broom, and maid broom, among others.

The concrete sealer repels the effects of aging and weathering.  However, after a number of years have passed, you may wish to refinish the fountain.  A high quality, outdoor latex paint for your outdoor lawn and garden fountain can be used.  You will need to apply several coats to, completely, seal the fountain and maintain a lasting finish.

White residue may, also, form on the bowl or shell of the fountain.  This is due to mineral buildup and evaporation.  Frequent rinsing with fresh water will help reduce the mineral build up on the fountain.  When the buildup becomes unsightly, it may be removed with a lime remover and fountain cleaner. 

Broken pieces and cracks sometimes occur with concrete fountains, statues and other lawn ornaments.  These breaks can be repaired with Quick Patch Epoxy or 15 minute epoxy available at hardware stores.  You must follow the instructions on the package.  The surface must be clean and dry before the product can be applied.  The product should dry and cure for 24 hours after it has been applied to your lawn ornament, fountain or statue.

Another issue that affects fountains is the water supply.  The water level of the fountain should be checked daily and water should be added as needed in order to maintain the pump in proper condition.  Depending on the amount of lime and mineral buildup in your water and where the fountain is located, the pump should be cleaned at least once a month if not twice.

To clean your fountain pump, add two cups of white household vinegar to one gallon of water.  Soak the pump in the solution for, approximately, 10 minutes.  Then plug the pump into an electrical outlet and let it run while it is submersed into the solution for approximately 30 minutes.  This will loosen the deposits that have formed on the pump.  It is important to remove any twigs, loose debris or leaves that have gathered on the screen.

Lawn ornaments, statues and concrete fountains need to be protected from severe winter weather because freezing could damage the fountain.  If you live in an area where temperatures reach below freezing, the fountain or lawn ornament should be stored indoors in an area such as a garage where it will be protected from snow and freezing temperatures.  If this is not feasible than the fountain or bird bath should be drained completely.

Once the birdbath or fountain has been drained completely, you can place burlap inside the bowl so no water can gather in the bowl.  The expanding and contracting of freezing and melting ice, water and snow can cause damage to the fountain.  The fountain can be covered with a waterproof cover so that no water can gather inside the bowl.  If you are storing your fountain inside, you should place a layer of burlap between the bowls so that no scratching can occur from the pieces rubbing together.  These simple steps can help you get your fountain through the winter and maintain your fountains for many years.

Old, spotty paint and graffiti also make brick and concrete surfaces unsightly.

What do you do when you want your building to look nice, respectful, professional, and inviting, and you’ve got problems like these all over the exterior? Calling up a brick and concrete cleaning contractor could be the beginning of a solution for you.

But what do these cleaners do, and how do they do it?

Brick and concrete cleaners will use what’s called abrasive blasting. It’s the process of harnessing pressure to propel abrasive material directly at the brick and concrete surfaces, in order to remove the contaminants, and to make the surface smoother and more handsome.

Here’s a list of some of the abrasives the contractor will use: glass bead blasting, sand blasting, soda blasting, or shot blasting.

Compressed air or liquid propels these materials onto the target surface. In the case of compressed air, the materials are propelled dry; in the case of liquid, they are propelled in a concentrated jet of water.

Some of the abrasive materials used are silica sand (this is the most common one); coal slag; metallic, synthetic, or mineral abrasives; and organic materials. The organic materials are comprised of ground nut shells, fruit kernels, and baking soda. They tend to be the best abrasives for cleaning brick, stone work, and for removing graffiti. That’s because they pose the lowest risk of damaging the contact material.

When it comes to equipment, brick and concrete cleaning contractors will bring in highly specialized tools and protection because of some dangerous health hazards associated with this type of work.

The basic components to the abrasive blasting mechanism are the mixer, an exhaust hood, a nozzle, and a gas supply line (for compressed air, the dry blasting technique).

The brick and concrete cleaning specialist will contain the area within a blast room. In here all the blasting goes on, and the blasting system is housed inside, too. They’ll place a dust collector in the containment area.

What’s called a “blast cabinet” is similar to the blast room but with one addition, a “closed-loop reclaim” system that recycles the abrasive blasting materials.

You should know that brick requires a significantly lower pressure than concrete: between 500 and 1000 pounds per square inch (PSI). The brick and concrete cleaning contractor should know that blasting on brick should not exceed 1500 PSI, and that 5000 PSI would ultimately damage the brick, possibly causing much more harm than the substances you’re trying to blast off of it.

But some of the abrasive materials available pose much lower health risks, and if the work environment is treated correctly, and the right precautions are taken, health hazards are greatly diminished.

Coal slag contains very low silica levels, so it doesn’t contribute to the risk of developing Silicosis. (The con with coal, though: it can release other pollutants into the air.) Metallic, synthetic, and mineral abrasives cause much lower dust and waste levels than sand and coal. And the organic abrasives won’t damage the contact material.

Consider the safety equipment available to the workers: Blast hoods and helmets; an air hose that filters out hazardous gases like carbon monoxide; special lenses on the helmets; ear muffs and body protection (gloves, overalls, leather coats, leather pants, a canvas blast suit).
