she may toss the egg out. it is damaged and i don’t think the chick will develop

no, it has human scent on it, even if it isn’t too damaged, she’ll probably ignore it or roll it out of the nest.

Yes the mother will leave the nest and abandon the egg.

She will push it back out, you should not touch it with your bare hands for your smell is on it and it is now tainted.

The egg is not viable anymore due to the crack. It is possible that the bird tossed it out knowing that something was wrong with the growing chick. It is a myth that birds will reject their babies if they are touched by humans. Birds do not have a good sense of smell, unless you are dealing with turkey vultures. Remove the damaged egg immediately if she has not yet already tossed it out. It is possible that the amount of disruption to the nest will make her leave all the eggs.

Birds have no sense of smell so you could have touched it with your hands. Cracked is yet another problem. She may abandon the nest.

Blah blah blah. “She’ll abandon the nest”… “Your smell, man! YOUR SMELL!” If this were the case, they would live downwind of us.

Pleople cannot assume unless they look at the broad picture. If she was in the nest and you tried to put the egg back and scared her off, then she may abandon it.

As long as there is still one good egg, she won’t leave the nest- but she may push the other egg back out. If she does, this time, please leave it :)

    Here’s a little egg lesson:

Birds know long before we do if the chick will survive or if the egg is good. Yes, accidents happen, and chicks and eggs could fall out of the nest. Otherwise, if they don’t feel that the chance of survival are good enough, they may push their own eggs and chicks out of the nest. Unlness you have personally seen the parent birds protecting the egg or feeding the nestling on the ground, there is a reason for them being there.

This is the hardship of captive bird breeders. It is hard to differentiate the good chicks tossed from the nest from the ones the parents are trying to ignore. Often, bird breeders will resort to hand feeding the chick, then find there are deformities. I have heard stories of chicks growing, however had under-developed wings and legs, some never feather out, or under a neocropsy, they find under developed lungs, little use of the stomach or a hole in the heart.
